Posted on 12 July 2010 by Ariani Soejoeti

This Federal Election, the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) is calling on all major political parties to commit Australia to play its full part in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

To help achieve these goals, agreed to by 189 Heads of State and Government in 2000, Australian NGOs working in international development ask the next Australian government to deliver better aid, more aid and just aid through the actions outlined.

  •   ACFID Call the Parties Policy Platforms (2.2 MiB)

  • Key recommendations:

    MORE AID

    1. Announce a clear timetable for accelerating growth in the Aid Budget to 0.7% of Gross National Income and collaboratively develop a Strategic Framework to position AusAID to manage the growth in the Aid Budget more effectively

    2. Support the introduction of the ‘Robin Hood tax’ on global financial market transactions to help fund development assistance and climate change adaptation

    BETTER AID

    3. Increase the share of development assistance delivered through NGOs and skilled volunteer programs from 7% to at least 10% of the Aid Budget

    4. Create the position of Ambassador for Women’s Rights, to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in our region

    5. Develop a mechanism within the AusAID Office of Development Effectiveness to monitor the impact of development programs on the rights and well-being of the poorest 20% in focus communities

    6. Promote the ratification, implementation and monitoring of the United Nations Convention against Corruption, especially in the Asia and Pacific regions

    JUST AID

    7. Increase funding to:

    • health to 20% of the overall Aid Budget (around $1200 million a year by 2012) – the emphasis of this funding should be on maternal and child health to help achieve MDG outcomes

    •primary and secondary education to around $400 million per annum – with a focus on supporting girls to complete primary school, in line with MDG targets

    •rural livelihoods to 12-14% of the Aid Budget over three years ($800 million by 2013) – priority should be given to supporting smallholder farmers, the majority of whom are women

    8. Fully fund the government’s strategy ‘Development for All: Towards a disability-inclusive Australian aid program 2009-2014’

    9. Ensure assistance to meet the challenge of climate change is new money (around $600 million by 2012-2013), not funds redirected from other development priorities and that it is aimed, primarily, at assisting the most vulnerable communities in our region

    10. Increase humanitarian funding within the AusAID Global Program budget to 10% and create predictable multiyear contingency funding for emergencies.

      Why new election costing another $170 millions people’s burden, politician extra pocketing?

      $170 millions will create a national hurray “Health Olympic Australia” project for a truly “Health Revolution” once described Australia health reform by ousted Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. A “Health Olympic Australia” project will direct benefits to everyone in Australia within 3 years, for everyone’s health creation, everyone’s wealth creation, and then benefit to everyone globally afterward?

      People demands fairer resources supported of lives today, not tomorrow, and not another 3 years on and on?

      There are at least five economic productivity outcomes will resulting significant GDP progressing from a “Health Olympic Australia” as follow:

      1. Reductions in Australian Health Workforce cost;
      2. Reduction in Healthcare cost;
      3. Reduction in lost productivity cost;
      4. Increase from agriculture outcome;
      5. Increase from “Health Olympic Australia” creation in goods/products exportation.

      Australia people will fill the miss opportunity to them should it exist today.

      What democratic societies should learn lessen from Australia election 2010:
      1. What voters crying for reforms not just parliament, but for all department?
      Voter’s pains did not link to high income Politicians and Bureaucracy.
      The Australia historical hung parliament demonstrated the big gap of inequality society between the small educated elite groups who get highest pay by talk feast used mouth work controlling live essential resources of the country in every social platforms against the biggest less educated groups who get lowest pay by hands work squeezed by discriminative policies that sucking live blood from individual poor/less wealth off?

      Voters’ cries do not care?

      Voter is crying for department reforms over 70 years that resulting a 2010 Hung Parliament?
      An iceberg example of voter’s crying:
      “……it seem to me there was an unfair to treat me when the merit of “Claim for Disability Support Pension or Sickness Allowance” form in detail clearly defy 15 hours classify the cut off point for acceptance, when comparing to my early assessment completed in June this year that it has the merit less than 8 hours (0-7) work capacity due to my long term medical impairment since an injury occurred in 2005”…….
      It was disappointing where the push of Parliament reform that mainly to brink good news to all MPs by the individual MPs during this year historical hung parliament in 70 years, and the reform did not including all Government Departments where it would directly brink good actions to all voters/or people?
