Make Poverty History (MPH) welcomes yesterday’s announcement by the Australian Government to match dollar-for-dollar all public donations made to eligible Australian aid and development agencies working in the Horn of Africa. The humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa has worsened in the past few months with more than 13 million people affected by famine.
MPH supports the initiatives underway by many member aid organisations such as Care, Caritas, Oxfam, Plan International and World Vision, to bring attention to the current crisis and the need to address the long term causes.
Make Poverty History supports constructive initiatives by all political parties that bring attention to tackling global poverty, and focus on achieving, the Millennium Development Goals. MPH encourages the Government to ensure that the dollar-for-dollar initiative will be supported with increased focus on long term solutions to address the root causes of poverty in the Horn of Africa, including food security.
