Call To Action
On September 25 2008, Make Poverty History hosted the Call To Action event in Sydney. It coincided with a high-level event at the United Nations, New York, where new commitments were announced on behalf of UN member states.
Key representatives from Australia’s International Aid and Development sector and media were in attendance to launch the new Make Poverty History TV ad and the campaign’s Celebrity Ambassadors. The TV ad, produced by MPH volunteers Spencer and Lloyd Harvey, features Missy Higgins and aims to create more awareness about the Make Poverty History campaign (more on the ad below). The Celebrity Ambassadors – Rove McManus, Missy Higgins, Brooke Satchwell, Lior, and Zoe Naylor – were announced as they took part in Stand Up events in October 2008.
Speeches were made on the night that highlighted Australia’s on-going responsibility to commit to the Millennium Development Goals. There is no excuse for not taking poverty seriously. Our generation, it was emphasised, can and must make the effort to eradicate the injustice of extreme poverty. The event was a big success in getting the message out there. The talented singer-songwriter, Lior, closed the evening with a signature performance involving a very special a cappella improvisation.
2008 MPH TV Commercial
Make Poverty History volunteers, Spencer and Lloyd Harvey, used their skills in media production to make a big contribution to the success of the campaign. Spencer was impassioned to make a difference after volunteering her time on the Make Poverty History 07 Roadtrip, which called all Australians to take poverty personally. For Spencer and Lloyd, who run their own Production House, the question of how to make a difference for world poverty was a no-brainer – produce an informative TV ad to get Make Poverty History’s message out there. By enlisting the talent of some generous Australians, Spencer and Lloyd have created an action-inspiring message to help end extreme poverty. You can watch the ad, featuring Missy Higgins, by going to our resources page.
Trivia Night
Make Poverty History interns organised a Trivia Night to raise funds for the 2009 Internship Program. The night was held at Trades Hall, Melbourne, with over 80 in attendance. It was an entertaining and informative evening for all. Sarah Marshall of Amnesty International Australia, who was a part of Make Poverty History’s inception in Australia, encouraged those attending to continue the fight against poverty. It was a good opportunity for yet more Australians to learn about the issues of world poverty. Thankyou to everyone who participated, you have helped raise $500 towards the 2009 Internship Program which will expand our reach in the Stand Up campaign leading up to October.

Wine by Design
In 2008, Make Poverty History joined forces with V-Know bringing together Australia’s celebrated wine-makers and the big names in design to raise $25,000 for the campaign. High profile designers and personalities created new designs for the type of wine they were matched with, including Allanah Hill, artist Ben Frost, wine-maker William Downie, who are a just to mention a few of those who collaborated in the colourful collage of design.
Wine By Design was a highly successful and imaginative event that brought together diverse talents under the same roof for a common cause. A very limited release of 20 bottles per wine sold through Vintage Cellars, which raised an astounding $25,000 towards the campaign.
Hair-A-Thon
In 2007, Silvana and her sisters ran a ‘Hair-A-Thon’ to raise funds and awareness of the Make Poverty History campaign as a part of the 07.07.07 day of action. The Hair-A-Thon raised an outstanding $11,000 for the campaign! Thank-you Silvana (and sisters) for your stellar efforts and commitment to Make Poverty History. It goes to show how far a bit of initiative and ingenuity can go towards making a difference.
