What better way to spread the word than to use the media. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper stating you are concerned about the issues. Some ideas of what to include:
- We are the first generation with the resources, knowledge and power to be able to eradicate extreme poverty. All we need is the will.
- Australia is sliding down the ranking of rich countries investment in overseas aid as a proportion of national wealth. Despite welcome commitments to increase aid Australia is still 19th of 22 rich OECD countries.
- Debt is a new form of slavery, as vicious as the slave trade and which robs people's control over their own futures. When countries are enslaved by debt they can't improve the lives of their people or have control over their own futures.
- International trade is neither free nor fair. Millions of poor people are forced to endure poverty as well as deny their kids a chance of a decent education because they cannot sell their crops and other products for a fair price as a result of billion dollar subsidies and dumping practices by the US and EU. A 1% increase in developing countries share of world exports could lift 128 million out of poverty.
- The Millennium Development Goals are an unprecedented global plan agreed to by the Australian Government and 190 other nations in 2000 to tackle poverty. The plan aims to halve extreme poverty by 2015 and is a crucial step towards making poverty history. We urge our Government to do its fair share towards meeting these goals.
